Alex Turner cuenta como compone sus canciones

Alex Turner, vocalista de Arctic Monkeys, se refirió a su experiencia como compositor y contó algunos detalles de cómo es su proceso de escritura.

Durante una entrevista para el canal oficial de YouTube de los premios Grammys, el líder de la banda inglesa declaró que siempre comienza a escribir en base a una idea, una especie de inspiración de la que surge la canción. Además, aclaró que no es cierto que para él los temas lleguen en una especie de epifanía, ya que se necesita de los instrumentos para componer las letras. “Tenés que tener el inicio de la idea musical, tocar la guitarra… cambiar de amplificador, etc. para poder terminar lo que será la canción”.

Respecto de AM, el último álbum de la agrupación, Turner pensó en un disco que se pudiera escuchar en el auto “mientras vas viajando por la ruta”

Elegidos mejores cabezas de cartel para un festival

 La European Festival Awards ha elegido a Arctic Monkeys por segundo año consecutivo como mejores cabezas de cartel para un festival.

Además la banda de Sheffield liderada por Alex Turner también se llevó el galardón al “himno del verano” otorgado a “R U Mine?”.

El mánager de la banda, Geoff Barradale, recogió  en De Oosterport en Groningen, Holanda, los dos premios en su nombre. Dijo que estaba orgulloso de recoger el premio a ‘R U Mine?” porque “un himno es una canción que hace que la gente baje sus móviles. ¿Conocéis esa enfermedad? Todos deberíamos bajar nuestros teléfonos y disfrutar del momento.”

No está mal, Arctic Monkeys arrebatan el premio por segundo año a Arcade Fire o Queens Of Stone Age. La doble victoria para los Arctic Monkeys fue parte de una mayor presencia este año del Reino Unido. Melvin Benn, Director gerente de Republic Festival, y actual responsable del FIB,  recibió el Premio a la trayectoria de toda una vida. Después de la entrega de los premios, declaró a NME: “Es genial tener esto, pero es como recibir un premio por ir a trabajar. No hago recuerdos, hago mañanas.”

Datos Curiosos de la Banda

• El cantante principal original de la banda fue Glyn Jones, un compañero del colegio de ellos. Alex era tímido como para mostrar su voz.

• Alex fue nombrado uno de los jóvenes más ricos del viejo continente, con aproximadamente una fortuna de 7.5 millones de euros

• El título de su album debut "Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not" es una frase del libro y la película "Saturday Night And Sunday Morning"

• Arctic Monkeys toco “Come Together” en los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres 2012.

• El primer recital al que Alex Turner asistió fue a uno de The Vines en Manchester. Dice que se sintió muy inspirado por el frontman Craig Nicholls. 

• Alex tiene supuestamente un tatuaje con el nombre del poeta John Cooper Clarke. Según Chris lo tiene en sus partes traseras.

• Matt se quebró el brazo boxeando. Le tuvieron que insertar una pieza de metal y dijo:"Soy el baterista biónico".

• La banda se ha declarado fan de  la película ‘El mago de Oz’ en diversas ocasiones; no sólo en las letras de sus canciones (Old Yellow Bricks) si no también cuando se disfrazaron como los personajes en los Brit Awards 2007 .

• "Fluorescent adolescent" fue co-escrita por la novia de Alex Turner de hace años: Johanna Bennett mientras ambos disfrutaban de unas vacaciones en el mediterráneo.

• Thom Yorke demostró públicamente su desacuerdo con el éxito repentino de los Arctic Monkeys ; diciendo que el hecho de que recibieran tanta atención era solo porque el negocio de la música estaba lleno de “incapaces”. 
  

¿Quienes son?

Arctic Monkeys es una banda inglesa de indie rock formada en el 2002 en Sheffield, Reino Unido.  El grupo actualmente está compuesto por el guitarrista principal y vocalista Alex Turner, el guitarrista Jamie Cook, el baterista Matt Helders y Nick O'Malley en el bajo, puesto ocupado anteriormente por Andy Nicholson. En lo que se refiere al estilo musical de la banda, ésta ha tomado referencia de otros grupos como por ejemplo: The Strokes, The Libertines, The Clash, The Jam, Oasis, John Lennon, Beastie Boys, Blur, John Cooper-Clarke, The Smiths, Braintax.

Generalmente son considerados parte de la escena post punk revival, junto a bandas como Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs y Bloc Party. Comenzaron a ser conocidos a través de demos hechos por sus fans y distribución de archivos en línea. Fueron anunciados como uno de los primeros actos de atención pública vía Internet, esto los catalogó como "la banda que pudo haber cambiado el mercado de la música".

Miembros de la banda

Alexander David Turner mejor conocido como Alex Turner nació en Sheffield, Inglaterra el 6 de enero de 1986 , es el vocalista y guitarrista principal de la banda The Arctic Monkeys.También ha grabado con un proyecto llamado The Last Shadow Puppets, junto con el músico y amigo Miles Kane. Alex es hijo único de dos profesores, los cuales desde muy chico le enseñaron a hablar alemán y lo acercaron a la música. En el año 2001 le regalaron su primera  guitarra. Siempre ha sido el principal compositor de la banda, sin embargo admitió que durante los inicios le costaba reconocerlo, ya que lo avergonzaba mostrar sus líricas.            

Nicholas O'Malley nació el 5 de julio de 1985. Es el bajista de la banda. O'Malley empezó a tocar el bajo a la edad de 16 años, luego de que sus ambiciones de tocar la bateria y la guitarra fueran negadas por su padre. Antes de The Arctic Monkeys, O'Malley tocaba el bajo en una banda de rock de garaje llamada The Dodgems.El día 25 de Mayo de 2006 se unió a los Artic Monkeys en reemplazo de Andy Nicholson, que declaró que no tomaría parte en el tour por Norteamérica, debido al estres producido por el ritmo de las giras,según sus propias palabras.

Matthew Helders nació el 7 de mayo de 1986. Es el baterista de la banda. Es el corista más destacable, apareciendo en pistas como “You Probably Couldn’t See For The Lights But You Were Looking Straight At Me”, "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor”, "Teddy Picker" y "D Is For Dangerous". También se puede notar su trabajo como vocalista en "Brick by Brick", canción de "Suck It and See." Es visto como el tranquilo y amable diplomático de la banda.

Jamie Robert Cook nació el 8 de julio de 1985 . Es  también guitarrista principal de The Arctic Monkeys, donde además realiza coros. Al igual que Alex Turner, Cook pidió un instrumento musical como regalo de Navida en 2001, recibiendo su primera guitarra eléctrica. Cook ha sido el miembro más hablador de la banda, diciendo y defendiendo a la banda numerosas veces.O'Malley fue anunciado en principio como un reemplazo temporal de Andy Nicholson hasta fin de año, pero luego de la definitiva renuncia de este último, Nick fue anunciado como bajista definitivo.

¿Por qué ese nombre?

El vocalista Alex Turner comentó que no tenía idea del significado del nombre, pues la idea se le ocurrió a Jamie Cook. Jamie, el guitarrita, se le ocurrió cuando estaba en la escuela, antes de que tuvieran la banda. Él siempre había querido estar en una banda llamada ‘Arctic Monkeys’ -"No tengo idea de donde viene el nombre. Es culpa de Jamie, a él se le ocurrió y ni siquiera nos dijo por qué. Sí él conoce el por qué, está ocultando el secreto de mi." Comentó Turner en una entrevista.
